--
Wasn't happy with the other versions out there, so I decided to give it a shot myself.
This might (or might not) be the way it is played, but it sounds good when played
along to the record version.
Feel free to comment if you see (or hear) any mistakes.

Oh, and thanks to 365_days_gone for his (her?) Guitar Pro version that made my work much easier.

Tuned a half-step down

Intro: F#m-F#m-A-E x2

[F#m]Two packs of cigarettes a day
The [A]strongest whiskey
Ken[E]tucky can make[F#m]
That's a recipe to put a [A]vagabond
On his [E]hands and knees[F#m]

I watched it all up close,
I knew him more than [A]most
I saw a side of [E]him he never showed[F#m]
Full of sympathy for a [A]world that
Wouldn't [E]let him be

[Bm] That's the man he was,
[D] Have you h[C#]eard enough?

[F#m]What a sh[A]ame, what a sh[E]ame,
To judge a life that you can't cha[F#m]nge
The choir s[A]ings, the church bells r[E]ing
So, won't you give this man his w[F#m]ings?
What a sh[A]ame to have to b[E]eg you to
See we're not all the [D]same[C#]
What a [F#m]shame

[F#m-A-E]
[F#m-F#m-A-E]
There's a [F#m]hard life for every silver spoon
There's a[A] touch of grey for every[E] shade of blue
[F#m]That's the way that I see life
If there was [A]nothing wrong,
Then there'd be [E]nothing right
[F#m]And for this working man they say could
Barely [A]stand
There's gotta be a be[E]tter place to [F#m]land
Some kind of remedy for a [A]world that
Wouldn't [E]let him be

[Bm] That's the man he was,
[D] Have you h[C#]eard enough?

[F#m]What a sh[A]ame, what a sh[E]ame,
To judge a life that you can't cha[F#m]nge
The choir s[A]ings, the church bells r[E]ing
So, won't you give this man his w[F#m]ings?
What a sh[A]ame to have to b[E]eg you to
See we're not all the [D]same[C#]

Bm-A <----- The two chords alternate rapidly;

What a shame I prefer playing power chords

Bridge:

Bbm-Cm-C#-Fm-Eb x2 <-- I also play this riff using power chords.

[Bbm]God forg[Cm]ive the [C#]hands that l[Fm]aid you [Eb]down,

They never knew how,
[Bbm]But your [Cm]broken h[C#]eart can br[Fm]eak the s[Eb]ound,

And change the season
[C#]Now the leaves are falling faster, [Eb]happily ever after
[C#]You gave me hope through your endeavors
Eb Fm F#m Ab Bb Cm C# <--- You can go above the 12th fret to make
And now you will live for-e--ver it sound exactly like the original
song, but since I play it on an
acoustic, I go down for the last 3
chords.
[F#m]What a sha[A]me, what a [E]shame,
To judge a life that you can't ch[F#m]ange
The choir s[A]ings, the church bells [E]ring
So, won't you give this man his w[F#m]ings?
What a sh[A]ame to have to b[E]eg you to
See we're not all the [F#m]same
What a sh[A]ame, what a sh[E]ame
'Cause we're not all the [F#m]same
What a sh[A]ame, what a sh[E]ame
'Cause we're not all the [F#m]same

[F#m-A-E]
[F#m-F#m-A-E]
