Stratovarius
Stratovarius được thành lập vào năm 1984 tại Phần Lan dưới cái tên Black Water. Ban nhạc trải qua nhiều sự thay đổi về mặt nhân sự và cả phong cách âm nhạc trước khi tìm thấy được nét riêng của mình. Những thành viên sáng lập của ban nhạc bao gồm Tuomo Lassila, Staffan Stråhlman, và John Vihervä.Vào năm 1985, Timo Tolkki gia nhập ban nhạc, thay thế Stråhlman chơi guitar, đồng thời thay đổi tên ban nhạc thành Stratovarius là một sự kết hợp giữa Stratocaster và Stradivarius đồng thời cũng kiêm luôn phần hát chính. Tolkki trở thành người dẫn đầu cũng như là bộ não của cả ban nhạc, hầu như đảm trách toàn bộ phần sáng tác. Anh không chỉ mang đến những giai điệu rock mạnh mẽ mà còn có sự kết hợp với dòng neo-classical metal. Ban nhạc tung ra vài demo cho các hãng dĩa vào năm 1987, cuối cùng là được sự chấp nhân của CBS Phần Lan. Năm 1989, Album đầu tiên của họ, Fright Night được phát hành, sau sự ra đời của 2 singles trước đó.
Sau khi rời khỏi CBS, ban nhạc trải qua nhiều sự thay đổi lớn về nhân sự, nhưng họ vẫn tiếp tục phát hành Album cùng hãng dĩa Bluelight, với cái tên Stratovarius II và sau đó là Twilight Time với hãng Noise. Năm 1994 họ phát hành Album thứ 3 Dreamspace, khi đó có sự gia nhập của tay guitar bass Jari Kainilainen, anh nhập band khi đã có hơn 70% chất liệu nhạc đã được thu âm. Tolkki quyết định không hát chính nữa mà mời Timo Kotipelto gia nhập với tư cách ca sĩ chính. Họ phát hành Album thứ 4 là Fourth Dimension vào năm 1995 và thu được thành công lớn, nhưng những xung đột và khác biệt về khuynh hướng âm nhạc đã khiến tay trống Tuomo Lassila và tay keyboard Antti Ikonen ra đi. Sau đó thì có sự gia nhập của hai thành viên không phải người Phần Lan là: tay keyboard Thụy Điển Jens Johannson (từng chơi cho Dio và Yngwie Malmsteen) và tay trống người Đức Jörg Michael. Sau đó thì Album thứ 5 được phát hành mang tên Episode. Đây cũng là một thành công khác của Stratovarius với sự kết hợp của dàn dây, dàn bè giao hưởng, được xem như một trong những Album thành công nhất của Stratovarius bởi các metalhead.
Đội hình này tiếp tục cho ra đời thêm nhiều Album thành công nữa: (bộ ba): Vison (1997), Destiny (1998) và Infinite (2000). Với mỗi Album như vậy, danh tiếng của Stratovarius ngày càng vang xa hơn ra khỏi Phần Lan, nổi tiếng khắp vùng Scandinavia và qua cả Nhật Bản. Nhiều metalhead khi làm các điều tra cho Album xuất sắc nhất của Stratovarius đều không ngần ngại chọn Vision, bản thân của Timo Tolkki khi trả lời các Interview cũng cho rằng đây là một trong những Album xuất sắc nhất của anh và các members trong Stratovarius.
Năm 2003, ban nhạc phát hành 1 project mang tính sử thi với 2 Album mang tên Elements (Part I và II). Những Album này cho thấy chất progressive và symphonic cao độ trong các sáng tác của band. Một đầu năm và một ra đời cuối năm 2003 đều với hãng Nuclear.
Cuối năm 2003, ban nhạc tan rã, Timo Kotipelto và Jorg Michael ra đi sau những xung đột với trưởng nhóm Tolkki. Tolkki dự định rẽ ban nhạc sang một hướng khác khi mời vocal nữ Mss K, cựu drumer của Hammerfall là Anders Johannson (anh trai của keyboardist Jen) tham gia ban nhạc. Tuy nhiên, tất cả đều không thành công. Ban nhạc im hơi lặng tiếng suốt năm 2004. Cùng thời gian này là việc Tolkki gặp phải những vấn đề về mặt thần kinh phải vào viện điều trị, ban nhạc gặp rất nhiều khó khăn và có thể xem là đã tan rã. Tuy nhiên, Tolkki đã trở lại vào đầu năm 2005, kết hợp các thành viên cũ lại (kể cả Timo Kotipelto - người lúc đó đã cho ra 2 Album solo là Waiting for the Dawn và Coldness- không mấy thành công). Jari Kainulainen ra đi vì lý do gia đình và tay bass Lauri Porra được mời thay thế.
Tháng 9 năm 2005, Stratovarius phát hành Album mang chính tên ban nhạc là Stratovarius. Trong suốt thời gian này, ban nhạc cũng tổ chức đi tour thế giới, bắt đầu tại Argentina và khu vực Bắc Mỹ (Mỹ và Canada) lần đầu tiên trong sự nghiệp. Họ chơi tại một số sự kiện như " Prog Power" tại Atalanta, cũng như tại một số địa điểm nổi tiếng khác như "B.B. King's House Of Blues" tại New York và rạp Trocaredo tại Philadelphia. Tour này cũng bao gồm khu vực châu Âu và Nhật Bản. Hiện ban nhạc cũng đang ráo riết chuẩn bị cho sự ra đời của Album mới. Trong cuộc phỏng vấn gần đây nhất Tolkki cho biết đã sáng tác gần như hoàn tất các ca khúc cho Album mới và dự định phát thành năm 2008. Có thể nói Stratovarius luôn được xem là một big band của dòng Power metal đương đại, hợp cùng Helloween hay Blind Guardian. Hiện nay tuy Power Metal không còn là một thể loại thịnh hành nữa nhưng một số ban nhạc vẫn thỉnh thoảnh thu hút sự chú ý khi phát hành các Album mới.
Trong giai đoạn này, các thành viên sáng lập cuối cùng rời khỏi ban nhạc. Không hài lòng với hướng đi mới, Tuomo Lassila quyết định rời khỏi ban nhạc cùng với Antti Ikonen, để lại Stratovarius tìm kiếm một tay trống mới và keyboard để điền vào chỗ của họ. Jörg Michael từ Rage được thuê là tay trống của họ và ngay sau khi Jens Johansson của Yngwie Malmsteen-nổi tiếng được thuê như keyboard. Một album giới thiệu hướng giao hưởng mới của họ với một dàn nhạc và dàn hợp xướng sử dụng vào các bài hát như "Season of Change" và "Forever". Cho đến khi việc phát hành album Polaris trong năm 2009.
